Citrix Netscaler Gateway has become an essential tool for organizations across various industries, serving as a secure platform for external access to virtualized applications. Users have found the software invaluable in addressing the business problem of security, providing an additional layer of protection against external threats. With the ability to serve as a VPN client and extranet client, Citrix Netscaler Gateway empowers remote work, enabling users to maintain productivity from anywhere. It is frequently used to facilitate remote desktop access, allowing individuals to work off their office desktops using any device, enhancing availability and user experience.
The software also plays a critical role in healthcare environments by providing secure and balanced access to main healthcare applications and virtualized machines. This ensures that sensitive patient data remains protected while healthcare professionals can securely access necessary resources remotely. Another significant use case is its deployment as a replacement for the previous Citrix Product called CSG/Citrix Secure Gateway. Companies have implemented Citrix Netscaler Gateway company-wide, utilizing load balancing and fail-over features for redundancy and SSL/TLS protocols for enhanced security.
Moreover, users highly recommend the product due to its user-friendly interface and years of positive experience. It has proven instrumental in facilitating tasks such as hotel reservations and metric checking with open tools, adding convenience and usefulness to everyday business operations. While Citrix Netscaler Gateway offers reliable and secure connections for most programs and software, some users have encountered difficulties accessing certain applications on restricted drives. Although these challenges exist, the software's overall functionality and usability make it a valuable asset across organizations.
In addition to securing internal application gateways, Citrix Gateway is utilized by consultants who remotely connect to clients' computers, gather data, and create bespoke training materials. It also serves as a gateway portal for cloud-based training environments during on-site consultations. Furthermore, organizations rely on Citrix Netscaler Gateway to access client environments remotely and publish applications and services on the internet while maintaining network security by segregating traffic between internal networks and DMZ.
Overall, Citrix Netscaler Gateway has proven to be an indispensable tool for organizations seeking secure external access to virtualized applications. With its robust features, ease of use, and ability to enhance productivity, the software plays a crucial role in enabling remote work, strengthening security measures, and ensuring seamless access to essential resources.
Reliable and High-Performing: Reviewers have consistently praised Citrix Netscaler Gateway as a reliable and high-performing tool for load balancing applications and services. Many users have stated that it provides level 4 load balancing, which significantly improves the performance of their applications. This reliability and high-performance capability greatly enhances the user experience.
Enhanced Security Features: Several reviewers have highlighted the enhanced security features offered by Citrix Netscaler Gateway. Users appreciate the seamless use of 2-factor authentication, which helps to reduce the risk of external hacks and ensures heightened security within the VPN. Additionally, users have found it beneficial that Citrix Netscaler Gateway allows for differing levels of security, enabling specific access through the VPN based on active directory security policies. These robust security measures provide peace of mind for organizations.
Easy-to-Use and Set-Up: Many users have found Citrix NetScaler to be an easy-to-use and easy-to-set-up tool. They appreciate its user-friendly interface and intuitive design, making it accessible even for those with limited technical expertise. Configuration Console: Difficult to Navigate Some users have found the configuration console of Citrix NetScaler to be unfriendly and difficult to navigate, making it challenging for them to set up and manage their system. Frequent Interruptions and Session Terminations Several reviewers have experienced frequent interruptions and session terminations while using Citrix NetScaler, requiring them to logout and login again. This disruption in workflow can be frustrating and time-consuming. Troubleshooting Complexity A number of users have mentioned that troubleshooting issues with Citrix NetScaler can be complicated, often requiring specific training or looking up steps, which can hinder the resolution process and lead to delays in resolving technical problems.

Citrix Netscaler Access Gateway will secure it all for you just make sure YOU secure training before implementing it.
- Citrix Netscaler Gateway is a solid front end for any organizations externally facing infrastructure. Nothing is impenetrable but Netscaler is as close to it as you can get.
- Netscaler is high on available customization so it can be used by both small shops and large shops in that it offers opportunity to change most parts of the system to your liking.
- In blending well with Citrix XenApp and Xendesktop systems, Netscaler is particularly strong in protecting other Citrix products. Both the Netscaler and the Xen systems have hooks built into them to best use each other.
- In keeping up with the customization needs, Netscaler can be quite a behemoth as to learning how best to use it. It does not at all work well out of the box and requires specific training or looking up steps to make most changes.
- In line with he need for training, making simple changes on the system not only need expertise, they are harder than they should be. Even with the expertise it is quite easy to mess something up and go into full panic mode.
- Documentation for the product is not up to what I think it should be. Reading it requires more knowledge than it should as to understanding what it is trying to get across.
- The largest positive impact was that it provided a path up upgrade from the now defunct CSG Citrix product. Because Netscaler Gateway is an at cost product, where CSG was not, one could argue there is no monetary ROI but the ROI in this scenario comes more from the ability to not have to use a non Citrix product and learn the skills needed to administer it.
- Negative wise, Netscaler Gateway can be quite costly in both upfront costs and maintenance fees. It is part of business and a requirement but when using it as a replacement for CSG you will have to account for several thousands of dollars per year in additional cost.
- Because it can implemented as a virtual server (it comes in both hardware and non hardware versions) the lack of need to add one more piece of hardware to our data center saves in space, up front costs, and power/cooling needs if you opt to go with the software based version.
I did do a test run on 2X's product which did include a secure gateway but then base 2X product was not really comparable to Citrix so did not go too far with it.
Citrix is like having a bodygaurd for your data
- Citrix is a great tool for managing controlled and secure access to remote environments, such as cloud based training environments.
- It is a worth ally for any organisation that needs to give secure access to data, such as the ability for authorised external consultants or project teams to safely and securely access a desktop computer remotely.
- The different levels/ways of creating a secure access gateway to data often mean it can be configured to provide as much security as an organisation needs.
- More flexibility to customise and apply company branding to the access gateway screen would be a useful tool.
- Sometimes the amount of security applied can make it difficult to understand the exact process for getting through the gateway. Organisations often send this process to us via email, which isn't always clear. If Citrix provided template instructions that its customers could use to forward to those needing access, with the ability to amend key data such as usernames/passwords etc. then it would make life easier for both parties.
- Our data is secure and protected from the outside world which is priceless.
- It saves our business money as we can provide our clients with a safe and secure alternative to accessing their data remotely rather than having to take the more expensive route of travelling on-site to gather the data we need.
- It gives us the opportunity to host on-site training using gated cloud based environments which enhances our business services. The ability to easily change access information, such as a password, after administering a training course gives us the flexibility we need to provide and subsequently restrict access to our training environments to suit our needs.

Citrix NetScaler, there is no doubt
- Citrix NetScaler as you might expect integrates extremely well with other Citrix products. Each new version enhances that.
- Again, Citrix NetScaler has many features that help ensure redundancy in the environment for itself and also downstream components.
- Because Citrix NetScaler is a software platform updates are frequent and so are enhancements. Citrix is also good to respond to community requests.
- Citrix has been working to improve the initial learning curve involved in getting started using Citrix NetScaler. It does still require a modest background in networking if you have a complex DMZ to architect it for.
- Occasionally new builds can introduce bugs. It's usually advisable to either install the latest builds in your test environment or wait for the community response before adopting it.
- Coming from using F5 previously to front end our Citrix environments we've found that once the NetScaler environment is stood up we have significantly less user issues.
- Citrix NetScaler features have allowed us to do much more than we could previously. We've been able to globally load balance our environments using a common dns name.
